Cambodia-Japan Trade Flourishes, Strengthening Bilateral Relations

Growing Trade Ties and Infrastructure Initiatives Enhance Cambodia-Japan Relations
In the first quarter of this year, Cambodia's exports to Japan surged to $365 million, marking an 18.4 percent increase compared to the same period last year. This growth solidifies Japan as Cambodia's fourth largest export destination, contributing 5.8 percent to the Kingdom's export market.

The rise in exports has also elevated Japan to Cambodia's fifth largest trading partner, with bilateral trade reaching $507 million in the first three months of 2024, reflecting an 11 percent year-on-year increase. Maintaining a trade surplus of $223 million with Japan for Q1, Cambodia's key exports include garments, bags, footwear, and furniture, while imports encompass machinery, automobiles, and electronic items.

This flourishing trade partnership has bolstered bilateral relations, evident in Japan's increased assistance through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Notable projects supported by JICA include major bridges, schools, hospitals, and roads, emphasizing people-centric sectors like water supply and healthcare, in addition to infrastructure development initiatives.

Japan's support extends to the expansion of Cambodia's sole deep-sea port in Sihanoukville, with a soft loan of $203 million for a new international terminal. Once operational by mid-2027, this terminal is expected to significantly enhance Cambodia's trade capabilities and economic development.

Last year's elevation of the Cambodia-Japan relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership underscores the commitment to deeper ties. With ongoing efforts to foster the enduring bond between the two nations, Cambodia and Japan anticipate further economic growth and investment opportunities.
