In a recent statement issued by Cambodia's Ministry of Defence, the tragic explosions at a military base in Kampong Speu province, resulting in the loss of 20 soldiers' lives and several injuries, have been attributed to a technical issue exacerbated by an extreme heatwave.

The investigation conducted by the ministry revealed that the incident, which occurred on April 27, 2024, was primarily due to the age and faulty condition of the weapons combined with the sweltering weather conditions.

Dispelling rumors of rebellion or terrorism, the ministry emphasized that the explosions were not caused by rebellious soldiers or any deliberate acts of violence.

Lieutenant General Yoeung Sokhon, commander of the Third Regional Military Command, reported extensive damage to buildings, ammunition warehouses, and military vehicles, along with significant destruction to nearby villagers' homes.

As Cambodia grapples with the aftermath of this tragedy, questions arise regarding the safety protocols and equipment maintenance within the military. Additionally, the record-breaking temperatures underscore the urgent need for climate resilience strategies to mitigate future risks.
