Việt Nam Seeks Cooperation with Cambodia over Funan-Techo Canal Project

Joint Efforts Aimed at Assessing Environmental Impact and Finding Solutions
Việt Nam is actively engaging with Cambodia to address concerns regarding the Funan-Techo canal project, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in assessing its environmental impact and finding suitable solutions.

The proposed canal, spanning 180km, aims to connect the Bassac River with Kep Port and the Gulf of Thailand. While Cambodia has outlined plans for the canal's construction and operation, Việt Nam has expressed its interest in understanding the project's potential effects on the Mekong Delta.

Efforts are underway to encourage Cambodia to share detailed project information, conduct joint research on its impacts, and adhere to international guidelines for transboundary impact assessment. Additionally, discussions have been held to address concerns about water resources, especially in light of increased drought and saltwater intrusion in the region.

Despite official assurances that the canal will be used solely for water transport, Việt Nam remains vigilant, seeking clarity on its intended purpose and operation. Through close coordination with the Mekong River Commission and other stakeholders, Việt Nam aims to ensure the sustainable management of the Mekong River's resources for the benefit of all riparian countries.
