Survey Reveals Positive Outlook on Press Freedom in Cambodia

Minister Neth Pheaktra Highlights Findings at Ministry of Information Press Conference
Exciting developments unfold in Cambodia's media landscape as Information Minister Neth Pheaktra unveils the results of a recent survey indicating a positive shift in the state of press freedom. Conducted among 341 journalists and presented during the "Status of Press Freedom in Cambodia" report at the Ministry of Information, the survey sheds light on the sentiments and experiences of media professionals in the country.

Minister Pheaktra revealed that an overwhelming 79.8% of surveyed journalists rated the press freedom situation in Cambodia as good, with 8.8% describing it as the best. Notably, 95% of respondents agreed that the media landscape actively contributes to the promotion of press freedom, while nearly 80% feel they have complete freedom in their reporting endeavors.

While the survey underscored the importance of professional ethics, highlighting a near-universal acknowledgment among participants, it also revealed educational gaps. Only 33.3% of respondents hold a bachelor's degree or higher, indicating a need for further academic qualifications within the field.

Despite challenges, training for journalists appears to be robust, with 91.2% having received some form of journalism training. However, Minister Pheaktra noted a disparity in the duration and scope of training, with the majority being short courses. Additionally, gender diversity remains an issue, with women constituting only 6.5% of those surveyed.

Minister Pheaktra emphasized the survey's significance as the first comprehensive, locally conducted assessment of press freedom by and for Cambodian journalists. These findings not only provide a snapshot of the current media landscape but also serve as a vital tool for future improvements and policy-making in the realm of press freedom.
