A devastating explosion rocked southwestern Cambodia over the weekend, claiming the lives of 20 soldiers at an army base in Kampong Speu province. Initial reports suggest that the tragic incident was the result of an accident stemming from the mishandling of ammunition by troops.

According to army spokesperson Maj. Gen. Mao Phalla, the explosion occurred on Saturday afternoon as soldiers were in the process of transferring ammunition from trucks to a storage facility. The blast, which also destroyed military vehicles and several buildings at the base, tragically claimed the lives of the soldiers involved.

The explosion not only resulted in significant loss of life but also caused damage to nearby homes in a village adjacent to the base. While 11 individuals sustained minor injuries, primarily from debris caused by the blast, the incident has sent shockwaves through the local community and beyond.
