A newly constructed Cambodia-Vietnam Friendship Monument in Siem Reap was damaged by an early morning explosion on Monday, according to local authorities. The blast occurred around 2 a.m. near a traffic roundabout, startling residents in the area. The monument, part of a series of 17 funded by Vietnam's Ministry of National Defense, commemorates the historical ties between Cambodia, Vietnam, and Laos.

The explosion comes amid growing unrest and online criticism of the 1999 Cambodia-Laos-Vietnam Triangle Development Area (CLV) agreement, which some activists fear could lead to Cambodia losing control over its territory and natural resources to Vietnam. These concerns have fueled protests among Cambodians abroad and heightened tensions within the country. Authorities have responded with increased security measures, including police and military deployments.

While no group has claimed responsibility for the explosion, the incident underscores the sensitivity of Cambodia's relationship with Vietnam, particularly given the historical and political implications of the friendship monuments. The ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP) has condemned the act, calling it a narrow-minded attack on the symbols of Cambodia's liberation from the Khmer Rouge.
