ASEAN: A Growing Economic Power Amid Geopolitical Shifts, Says BCG

The ASEAN bloc is positioned for continued economic growth, with robust trade and infrastructure advancements, despite challenges from global trade tensions.
ASEAN is emerging as a significant global economic force, with the potential to become a superpower amid shifting geopolitical landscapes.

As the ASEAN Economic Community continues to strengthen, the bloc is increasingly focused on economic integration and resilience in the face of external pressures, particularly from trade wars and tariffs, notably with the United States and China.

Boston Consulting Group (BCG) highlights ASEAN's growth, fueled by domestic demand and infrastructure development, positioning it as a self-reliant economic bloc.

The region’s trade is expected to grow by 3.7% annually, surpassing global trade growth projections, with trade between ASEAN and China increasing at a faster rate of 5.6%.

Domestic consumption in ASEAN is expected to reach USD 4 trillion by 2031, driven by a growing middle class and a projected 84% of households in the middle and high-income brackets.

ASEAN's infrastructure advancements, including energy, transport, and digital networks, have enhanced connectivity and trade.

Notable initiatives such as the ASEAN Broadband Corridor and the Trans-Asean gas pipeline have bolstered economic integration.

The region's digital economy is also seeing rapid expansion, marked by the launch of the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement in December 2023, aimed at transforming ASEAN into a leading digital economy.

Despite challenges, such as a potential slowdown in trade with Europe due to carbon-pricing measures, ASEAN's strategic position—both geographically and economically—enables it to navigate relations with both Eastern and Western powers.

ASEAN’s collective strength, with over 650 million people, continues to allow the region to punch above its weight on the global stage.
