Over 10,000 Cambodians have received cataract and eye disease treatments through joint efforts by Cambodia's Ministry of Health and China's GX Foundation. The recently concluded Prey Veng Cataract Eradication Project provided free surgeries to 3,891 individuals and treated 5,367 for other eye conditions. This 18-month project involved 63 Chinese ophthalmologists making eight visits to Cambodia.

Following the success in Prey Veng, the GX Foundation plans to extend its support to other regions. Previously, a similar mission in Kampong Cham saw over 6,000 people receive free cataract surgeries. The foundation has also donated mobile ophthalmology units and a patient transport minibus to local health facilities, significantly enhancing the healthcare infrastructure.

Health Minister Chheang Ra and GX Foundation Chairman Leung Chun Ying have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to launch a new cataract elimination project in Kampong Speu and a dengue fever prevention initiative from 2024-2026. These efforts aim to improve Cambodia's healthcare system, achieve universal health coverage, and eliminate preventable blindness by 2030.
