In an initiative to curb irresponsible marketing and advertising of alcohol products, the Ministry of Information, along with key beverage suppliers and associations, has adopted a code of conduct aimed at promoting responsible practices in Cambodia.

During a signing ceremony held on June 11 in Phnom Penh, Information Minister Neth Pheaktra, who also heads the Alcohol Product Advertising Management Team, joined representatives from HEINEKEN, CAMBREW, and industry associations WSBIDA and APISWA to formalize the agreement.

Minister Pheaktra highlighted the government's concern over alcohol consumption and its negative repercussions, such as traffic accidents, drug abuse, sexual exploitation, and HIV transmission. He emphasized that while adherence to the code is voluntary, it serves as an ethical guideline that encourages best practices among alcohol suppliers and sets a benchmark for responsible behavior in the industry.

The code aims to shield minors from the adverse effects of alcohol and uphold social dignity, individual rights, and privacy. Pheaktra urged additional alcohol producers, importers, distributors, and advertisers to adopt the code and diligently implement its principles.

The government has also put in place mechanisms, procedures, and legal standards, including the formation of a dedicated working group, to oversee alcohol product advertisements, ensuring consumer protection and fostering ethical business practices within the sector.
