Cambodia Advances Social Support for Rubber and Banana Farmers

National Dialogue Leads to Promising Improvements in Working Conditions
A significant national dialogue focused on enhancing social support for farmers and communities involved in Cambodia's rubber and banana production chains was held at Hotel Cambodiana on October 31, 2024. Organized by seven key organizations, the event brought together corporate leaders, ministry officials, workers, and civil society groups to address pressing concerns and advocate for better working conditions in the agricultural fields.

Discussions centered around establishing a minimum wage comparable to the garment sector, implementing holiday pay, and ensuring the availability of safety equipment and first aid kits. Representatives highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by vulnerable groups, including women farmers, small-scale rubber producers, and forestry communities. Leng Piseth, a sector representative, emphasized the need for equal treatment of workers, the end of discrimination against pregnant employees and union members, and the extension of the National Social Security Fund to all workers.

The dialogue underscored the urgent need for legislative support and corporate responsibility to improve labor conditions. With Cambodia's rubber exports increasing by over eighteen percent in 2024 and banana exports remaining a vital part of the economy, stakeholders are committed to fostering a safer and more equitable environment for those who sustain these essential industries. Efforts continue to ensure that the voices of workers like Khem Lok and Chea Kunthea lead to meaningful and lasting changes.
