Cambodia and Thailand Continue Negotiations Over Koh Kut Dispute

Senate President and Prime Minister call for calm and emphasize peaceful resolution of territorial issue
Samdech Techo Hun Sen, President of the Senate and highest representative of King Norodom Sihamoni, addressed the ongoing negotiations between the Royal Governments of Cambodia and Thailand regarding the Koh Kut territorial dispute. Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 32nd National Assembly of Buddhist Monks 2024, Hun Sen emphasized the government's commitment to resolving the issue through dialogue, rather than through escalating tensions.

He expressed concern over opposition groups attempting to provoke unrest among the Cambodian populace by inciting reactions to the dispute. The Senate President urged citizens to remain calm and vigilant, stating that there is no immediate plan to escalate the matter to the International Court of Justice. He also called for restraint from the Cambodian army, advising against any military mobilization in response to the Koh Kut situation.

Prime Minister Hun Manet, at a separate graduation ceremony at the Royal University of Phnom Penh, echoed these calls for calm. He reinforced the government's stance on safeguarding Cambodia’s territorial integrity and rejected claims of encroachment. The Prime Minister called for discussions on border issues to be conducted through formal channels and not through social media, stressing the importance of avoiding actions that could inflame tensions. He reminded all parties that border disputes, particularly the Koh Kut issue, should be addressed diplomatically.

Hun Manet underscored that until a resolution is reached through negotiations, the status of Koh Kut remains secure. He reiterated the importance of peace and diplomacy in resolving international disputes.
