Cambodia and Thailand Increase Collaborative Efforts to Tackle Call Centre Scams

The governments of Thailand and Cambodia are collaborating to combat transnational scam networks functioning in border areas.
The governments of Thailand and Cambodia have escalated collaborative efforts to dismantle cross-border call centre scam networks, especially those operating in Poipet.

Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra confirmed Cambodia's comprehensive cooperation following talks with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet.

Shinawatra noted that ongoing communications at working levels between the two nations continue to be open, with Cambodia providing full support in current investigations and law enforcement activities. The Thai government is undertaking assessments through its steering committee dedicated to preventing and addressing security threats in border regions, including human trafficking, drug trafficking, and scamming operations.

The committee comprises high-ranking members from the Royal Thai Armed Forces, Royal Thai Police, and the Office of the Narcotics Control Board. A recent operation resulted in the deportation of 93 Thai citizens from Cambodia, who were apprehended during synchronized raids on scam centres in Poipet.

These individuals are presently facing legal proceedings in Thailand. Pol Gen Thatchai Pitaneelaboot, inspector-general of the Royal Thai Police, confirmed that he has been designated to work with Cambodian police and relevant agencies to strategize further actions.

Cambodian authorities are reportedly gearing up for an expanded crackdown on scam networks. The Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs continues to provide assistance to foreign nationals who were previously recruited into scam networks, particularly from Myanmar.

As of March, 7,372 individuals have received assistance, with 4,895 repatriated through Thailand.

The majority were from China (3,634), Indonesia (653), and India (549). The Thai government is also collaborating with the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission to tackle technical and regulatory issues associated with the operation of call scam networks.

Authorities have called for extra support from private sector entities to improve the effectiveness of prevention and response strategies.
