Cambodia and World Bank Discuss Water Utility Improvements

Strategic Partnership Aims to Enhance Water Sector and Sustainable Growth
H.E. HEM Vanndy, Minister of Industry, Science, Technology & Innovation, received a delegation from the World Bank to discuss strategic partnerships aimed at enhancing public water utilities and boosting the capacity of private water operators in Cambodia.

During the meeting, Minister Vanndy expressed gratitude for the World Bank's ongoing support in various sectors, particularly in water supply. He emphasized water as a crucial priority in the government's Pentagonal Strategy Phase 1, highlighting the need for strong policies and strategies to foster the water sector's development and ensure sustainable growth.

Minister Vanndy outlined recent initiatives, including the transformation of provincial public water utilities into public enterprises. He detailed his priorities for achieving Cambodia’s sustainable development goals, focusing on improving public utilities and supporting private water operators to ensure universal access to clean water.

Ms. Anna Wellenstein, Regional Director for East Asia and Pacific of the World Bank’s Sustainable Development Practice Group, led the delegation. She reaffirmed the World Bank's commitment to these efforts, particularly through the Water and Sanitation for All in Cambodia (WASAC) project, which supports public utilities in Batambang, Pursat, and Mondulkiri provinces to optimize their operations.

Minister Vanndy also discussed challenges during the last dry season, where depleted water sources led to insufficient raw water for clean water production in some areas. He mentioned that MISTI is collaborating with partners to develop water supply master plans in priority provinces.

The World Bank is also aiding MISTI in implementing regulations and best practices in potable water management, crucial for promoting access to clean water and accelerating economic development in Cambodia.
