Cambodia Considers Thailand's Single Visa Policy to Boost Regional Tourism

"6 Countries, 1 Destination" Initiative Aims to Streamline Travel and Enhance Economic Cooperation
Cambodia is set to evaluate Thailand’s "6 Countries, 1 Destination" single visa policy, which facilitates cross-border travel for tourists from Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Thailand. The decision follows discussions between Cambodian Minister of Tourism Huot Hak and Thai Foreign Minister advisors Dusit Manapan and Chayika Wongnapachant during a meeting in Phnom Penh on October thirty-first. Cambodia expressed support for the initiative and plans to consult with its Ministry of Interior, Customs Department, and other relevant agencies. The feedback will be presented to Cambodia's cabinet ahead of Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra’s official visit.

The "6 Countries, 1 Destination" initiative aims to promote seamless tourism and economic collaboration among the six nations by establishing linked tourism routes, enhancing flight connections, and coordinating regional festivals. Key proposals include strengthening private sector cooperation, creating connected tourism itineraries that feature UNESCO heritage sites, and expanding transportation options by land, water, rail, and air. For example, Thai Airways plans to increase flights to Cambodia’s Siem Reap, while new water and rail routes would link regions in both countries.

Additionally, the plan seeks to implement a regional tourism calendar that aligns key festivals such as the Thai-Lao-Khmer New Year and Chinese New Year, offering tourists benefits like hotel discounts and expedited immigration processes. The initiative also emphasizes knowledge-exchange programs and the development of tourism business networks within the region. By fostering these cooperative efforts, Cambodia and Thailand aim to enhance the tourism experience, attract more visitors, and stimulate economic growth across Southeast Asia.
