Cambodia has recorded a sharp rise in mental illness cases, reaching over 282,000 in 2024—an increase of nearly 200 percent from the previous year. While more patients are seeking medical help, mental health services remain inadequate, with limited access to psychiatrists and a lack of coverage for counseling under the NSSF program. Experts stress the need for improved mental health education, expanded resources, and stronger national strategies to address the growing crisis.

Factors such as economic struggles, trauma, and rising alcohol consumption are contributing to the issue. With nearly half a million Cambodians suffering from depression or anxiety, specialists are calling for urgent investment in mental health services to prevent long-term consequences.
