The Ministry of Health of the Kingdom of Cambodia has initiated a comprehensive measles-rubella supplementary immunization activity (MR SIA) aimed at safeguarding over 1.5 million children aged nine months to five years across 25 provinces. Launched on October 31, 2024, the nationwide campaign is supported by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, with technical assistance from the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and the Clinton Health Access Initiative. This initiative comes in response to a global surge in measles cases, which more than doubled from 170,000 in 2022 to over 320,000 in 2023, largely due to disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Cambodia faces an increased risk of measles and rubella outbreaks, particularly among vulnerable populations such as children in remote areas, migrants, and ethnic minorities. The MR SIA seeks to bridge immunity gaps by providing the combined MR vaccine to ensure comprehensive protection. H.E. Prof. CHHEANG Ra, Minister of Health, emphasized the importance of reaching high-risk and hard-to-reach communities to achieve Cambodia’s goal of becoming measles-free. The campaign utilizes WHO-prequalified vaccines and auto-disable syringes, ensuring safety and effectiveness for all participating children.

Technical experts and health officials are working diligently to ensure full coverage and effective delivery of the vaccines. Dr. Marianna Trias of WHO highlighted the campaign’s role in promoting health equity and strengthening Cambodia’s health security. By enhancing routine immunization programs and conducting widespread vaccination efforts, Cambodia is making significant strides toward preventing disease outbreaks and ensuring a healthier future for its youngest citizens.
