Cambodia Pushes Forward with Funan Techo Canal

Kingdom Stands Firm Despite Vietnam's Calls for Detailed Information
Cambodia remains steadfast in its plans to proceed with the $1.7 billion Funan Techo Canal project, affirming its commitment to socioeconomic advancement despite Vietnam's repeated requests for detailed information. The 180-kilometre-long canal, set to link Phnom Penh's port to Kep province, signifies a significant milestone in Cambodia's development journey.

Anticipated to commence construction by the end of this year or early next year, the Funan Techo Canal project aims to bolster transportation infrastructure and regional connectivity. Spearheaded by Cambodia and financed by China's Bridge and Road Corporation, the canal project has garnered attention and sparked discussions with neighboring countries, particularly Vietnam.

Vietnam's Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed high interest in Cambodia's canal project, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and information sharing among Mekong River Commission (MRC) countries. However, Cambodia maintains that it has fulfilled its obligation by notifying the MRC Joint Committee about the project's details.

Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol clarified that the canal project aims to benefit not only Cambodia but also neighboring countries, addressing concerns raised by Vietnam regarding water usage and environmental impacts. Furthermore, Cambodia asserts that the project aligns with the 1995 Mekong Agreement and emphasizes the socioeconomic benefits it will bring to the region.

With meticulous planning and collaboration with esteemed organizations, including China Communications Construction Company (CCCC), Cambodia aims to navigate through challenges and ensure the successful completion of the Funan Techo Canal project, paving the way for enhanced regional connectivity and socioeconomic progress.
