Cambodia's Drive Towards Inclusive Education: A Path for Every Child
Government and International Bodies Collaborate to Ensure Access to Quality Education for All
In Cambodia, where the youth population is rapidly growing, the government and international partners are focusing on inclusive education to ensure that every child, regardless of background or ability, has access to quality learning. The Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport, with support from UNICEF and the EU, has launched the Inclusive Education Action Plan 2024-2028. This plan emphasizes providing educational opportunities for children with disabilities, changing societal attitudes, and fostering collaboration among stakeholders.
In addition to inclusive education efforts, the country is also making strides in digital transformation, aligning educational reforms with broader socio-economic policies. Efforts such as the USAID-funded Inclusive Primary Education Activity (IPEA) have shown significant improvements in early grade reading proficiency and are now being expanded to benefit more students nationally.
Despite these initiatives, challenges remain, particularly in rural and indigenous communities, where access to education is still limited. The Ministry of Education is addressing these disparities through multilingual curricula and specialized teacher training programs, but ongoing efforts are needed to bridge the gap between urban and rural education quality.
