A fish passage built in Kralanh district, Siem Reap province, has transformed the livelihoods of local communities by restoring fish populations and reducing food expenses for families. The Sleng Fishway, completed in early 2023, allows fish to migrate across a dam, improving breeding conditions and increasing available fish stocks.

For 75-year-old Heang Lern and his wife, the fish passage has been life-changing. With their children working in Thailand, they now catch enough fish to feed their three grandchildren and even sell some for extra income. The community has seen rare fish species return, and illegal fishing has decreased due to conservation efforts. Local authorities urge residents to protect the passage, which benefits over 5,000 people by improving food security and irrigation for farming.
