Cambodia’s Malys Angkor Rice Crowned World’s Best Rice 2024

Award-winning rice showcases Cambodia’s rich agricultural heritage and cultural pride
Cambodia’s Malys Angkor rice has been named the World’s Best Rice for 2024 at the prestigious World Rice Conference held in Manila, Philippines. Known for its fragrant aroma, soft texture, and subtly sweet taste, Malys Angkor triumphed over competitors from Thailand, Vietnam, and India.

Chan Sokheang, President of the Cambodia Rice Federation, highlighted the cultural significance of rice in Cambodia, describing it as not just food, but a unifying symbol of heritage and pride. Yean Sreyyann, President of the Agricultural Cooperative in Battambang Province, emphasized that the rice reflects Cambodia’s cultural identity, grown using traditional practices passed down through generations.

Unlike other varieties, Malys Angkor rice is cultivated only once a year during the rainy season, requiring five to six months of careful attention. This extended growing period ensures the premium quality that sets it apart in global markets.

Cambodia’s rice industry has seen significant growth, with annual production rising from nine million tonnes in 2012 to thirteen million tonnes in 2024. This increase has been fueled by the shift from subsistence farming to commercial production and rising global demand, particularly from Europe, the United States, and Australia.

Despite the challenges posed by climate change, Cambodia is investing in modern farming techniques and sustainable practices to secure the future of its rice industry. Both Sokheang and Sreyyann expressed optimism about expanding exports and continuing to share Cambodia’s cultural pride with the world through Malys Angkor rice.
