Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet Highlights Dual Impact of AI at ASEAN Ministerial Meeting

Balancing Benefits and Challenges of AI for Economic and Social Progress
In a significant address at the 20th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Science, Technology, and Innovation held in Siem Reap City, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet discussed the dual aspects of artificial intelligence (AI) as both a boon and a challenge to economic growth and societal advancement.

During the conference, Hun Manet emphasized AI's transformative impact across various sectors, including education, healthcare, business, and logistics, acknowledging its role in improving efficiency and decision-making processes. However, he also highlighted the complexities AI introduces, particularly regarding ethics, environmental impact, transparency, fairness, and data privacy.

"Artificial intelligence has seamlessly integrated into our daily lives, enhancing our routines and operations," Hun Manet noted. He stressed the importance of addressing the ethical dimensions and social implications of AI deployment to ensure it aligns with human values and rights.

The Prime Minister expressed concern over AI's potential to disrupt traditional job markets and the necessity for educational reforms to prepare the workforce for a shifting economic landscape. He pointed out that while AI can significantly alter employment patterns, it also creates new opportunities that can benefit society at large.

Hun Manet called for balanced governance of AI technologies, advocating for regulations that protect individual privacy and prevent misinformation. "As AI becomes increasingly commonplace, even in simple tasks like searching on a smartphone, it is crucial that we maintain vigilance over its applications to ensure it serves the greater good," he concluded.

The ASEAN meeting serves as a platform for regional leaders to forge a cohesive approach toward embracing technological advancements while tackling the accompanying challenges head-on.
