EU Invests in Cambodia’s Agriculture Sector
Funding to Boost Market Access and Farmer Incomes
The European Union is investing nearly $87 million to modernize Cambodia’s agricultural sector, benefiting farmers and agribusinesses, particularly in rural areas. The initiative includes a $16.3 million EU grant for the ASPIRE-AT program, which will provide infrastructure, technical support, and market expansion opportunities from 2025 to 2030.
Key projects include upgrades to research centers and laboratories across multiple provinces, as well as the construction of the Koh Khsach Tonlea bridge in Kandal to improve transportation. The investment aims to enhance food safety, increase production, and create better export opportunities, especially for cashew and pepper farmers. While industry leaders welcome the initiative, some have raised concerns about access to grants and quality testing costs.
The European Investment Bank and Cambodian officials stress that improving certification and processing standards will help farmers secure higher prices and enter international markets. The program aligns with Cambodia’s goal of achieving upper-middle-income status by 2030.
