French Language and Francophonie Week Celebrates French Culture in Cambodia

From March 12-22, Cambodia hosts a vibrant program showcasing the French language and Francophone cultures.
The French Institute of Cambodia and the French Embassy are presenting a diverse cultural program for this year’s French Language and Francophonie Week, running from March 12 to 22, 2025. The event, which celebrates the richness of French-speaking cultures worldwide, includes a mix of activities such as literary discussions, film screenings, performances, and workshops.

Highlights of the program include a meeting with comic book author Jean-Louis Tripp, who will discuss his works, as well as performances celebrating French language through song and public speaking. Film screenings from directors in Tunisia, Morocco, Canada, and Ivory Coast will also be featured. In addition, a storytelling session will share Ivorian tales, and a special concert by lyricist Arthur Ribo and pianist Roch Havet will involve improvisation, creating an unscripted narrative based on audience input.

The event coincides with the International Day of Francophonie on March 20 and is part of a broader initiative to promote French language education and cultural exchange. Cambodian schools and universities are participating, with a tour of Molière’s *The Imaginary Invalid* presented by the New Caledonian theatre group “Les Incompressibles.” Arthur Ribo will also lead workshops in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, and Battambang for secondary school students.

With over 22,000 students in Cambodia learning French, the French embassy continues to support language education through teacher training and cultural initiatives. The celebration also highlights Cambodia’s growing role in the Francophone community, particularly with the upcoming 20th Francophonie Summit set to be hosted in Cambodia in 2026.
