Halo Trust Commends Cambodian Mine Action Authority for Effective Mine Clearance Operations

Significant Milestone in Mine Clearance and Community Safety
The Halo Trust has praised the Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority (CMAA) for its strong leadership and coordination in mine clearance efforts across Cambodia. This commendation was made during a farewell meeting on July 25, between Mr. Miles Hawthorn, the outgoing Director of Halo Trust in Cambodia, and Ly Thuch, Senior Minister and First Vice President of CMAA.

Mr. Hawthorn expressed gratitude for CMAA’s unwavering support and partnership, which have significantly contributed to Halo Trust’s 30-year mission in Cambodia. The collaboration has led to substantial progress in clearing mines and explosive remnants of war (ERW), enhancing community safety and national development. Under this partnership, over 511 square kilometers of mine-contaminated land have been cleared, with 322,015 anti-personnel mines, 5,117 anti-tank mines, and 219,571 pieces of ERW destroyed. Additionally, more than 1.5 million rounds of small arms ammunition have been safely disposed of.

Ly Thuch extended heartfelt thanks to Halo Trust for its pivotal role since 1991 and acknowledged the significant support from international partners including Germany, the United States, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Ireland, and the HDR&D programme. He emphasized the bravery and dedication of deminers who have risked their lives to safeguard the Cambodian populace. Mr. Tobias Wehitt will succeed Mr. Hawthorn as the Director of Halo Trust in Cambodia, continuing the vital work of mine clearance and community rehabilitation.
