Since 2006, the Harpswell Foundation has provided young Cambodian women from rural provinces with safe housing and leadership training while they pursue higher education in Phnom Penh. Founded by American scientist Alan Lightman after witnessing the struggles of female students lacking proper accommodation, the foundation now operates two dormitory facilities and an in-house leadership academy. The program offers critical thinking, communication, and global awareness training, helping students develop the skills needed to succeed.

Many students, like Va Serey and Lam Sreyneth, have overcome societal expectations and financial obstacles to pursue their education. Serey, from Preah Vihear province, worked hard to earn a place at Harpswell, despite initial resistance from her parents. Meanwhile, Sreyneth, from Banteay Meanchey, has thrived in the foundation’s supportive environment and will soon travel to the U.S. to study. As Harpswell continues its mission, it nurtures Cambodia’s next generation of female leaders, empowering them to transform their futures and inspire their communities.
