On International Women’s Day, Prime Minister Hun Manet hiked the Khnong Phsar and Khnong Sampov mountains, highlighting their potential for eco-tourism and local economic growth. He was accompanied by Tourism Minister Huot Hak, Environment Minister Eang Sophalleth, and Kampong Speu Governor Cheam Chan Sophorn. In a March 9 social media post, he described the four-and-a-half-hour trek as rewarding, allowing him to witness the area’s natural beauty beyond what he had previously seen online.

During discussions with local residents, Hun Manet reaffirmed that vehicles are only permitted at the mountain’s base to maintain the integrity of the environment. Khnong Phsar, located at the intersection of Koh Kong, Kampong Speu, and Pursat provinces, has drawn over 100 visitors since January. Known for its diverse wildlife, including endangered species such as Asian elephants and clouded leopards, the area is also rich in history, having served as a strategic Khmer Rouge hideout. The government is now focusing on sustainable tourism initiatives to attract more visitors while preserving its natural and cultural significance.
