Indonesia and Cambodia Deepen Defense Cooperation to Strengthen Regional Peace

Leaders reaffirm commitment to military collaboration at Indonesia’s National Armed Forces Anniversary
Indonesia and Cambodia have reaffirmed their strong commitment to enhancing military cooperation for both national and regional peacekeeping efforts. During the commemoration of Indonesia's 79th National Armed Forces Anniversary on October 25 at the Indonesian Embassy, Indonesian Ambassador to Cambodia, Dr. Santo Darmosumarto, highlighted military cooperation as a cornerstone of the enduring relationship between the two countries. He emphasized the implementation of various capacity-building programs for military personnel and the importance of translating close friendships into concrete cooperation under the leadership of Indonesia's new President Prabowo Subianto.

Cambodia's Ministry of Defense, represented by Lieutenant-General Phat Vibol Sopheak, expressed optimism about deepening military ties, noting the remarkable improvement in bilateral relations driven by mutual respect and a shared commitment to regional prosperity. The partnership dates back to the 1970s and was significantly strengthened in the 1990s when Indonesia deployed nearly 4,000 peacekeepers to the UNTAC mission, contributing to Cambodia's stability. Both nations celebrated 65 years of diplomatic relations, with plans to explore further areas of cooperation to preserve peace, security, and prosperity in Southeast Asia.

In addition to defense cooperation, the Indonesian embassy has been active in promoting bilateral relations through various initiatives, including trade exhibitions, business forums, and academic exchanges. In September, the embassy rebranded its annual trade and tourism event to "Sousdey Indonesia," a Khmer greeting meaning "Hello, Indonesia," aiming to showcase Indonesian products, promote tourist destinations, and highlight educational opportunities and scholarships available in Indonesia. These efforts underscore the commitment of both countries to fostering a strong and multifaceted partnership.
