Japanese Men Arrested for Alleged Involvement in International Fraud Ring
Four men, part of a scam network based in Phnom Penh, are linked to ¥3 billion in fraudulent activities across Japan
Police from Saitama and other prefectures have arrested four Japanese men transferred from the Philippines, suspected of being involved in a special fraud operation. The men, who were arrested on Monday, are believed to be members of a group based in an apartment in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. This group allegedly carried out telephone scams that defrauded victims across 29 Japanese prefectures, causing a total loss of ¥1 billion.
The group is also linked to a larger-scale operation that police estimate has caused ¥3 billion in damage. Investigators had already arrested 29 other individuals in connection with the fraud, including 25 apprehended by Cambodian authorities. The four men had fled Phnom Penh before the Cambodian raid. One of the men, Jun Kiyohara, 30, is suspected of being in charge of the fraud operation's base. The group’s scams included deceiving elderly victims into sending large sums of money, such as a woman in Nagano Prefecture who lost over ¥30 million.
