Khmer Artefacts Boost Visitor Numbers at National Museum of Cambodia
Visitor Surge Following Artefact Display
The National Museum of Cambodia has seen a substantial increase in visitors after showcasing Khmer artefacts recently returned from overseas. The museum's collection of Cambodian treasures continues to grow as the country successfully reclaims antiques that were looted and traded abroad.
Chhay Visoth, the museum's director, announced the arrival of 14 artefacts from the US on July 3, with an official ceremony held on July 4. Although these items are not yet available for public viewing, additional pieces are expected in the coming months. Prime Minister Hun Manet is set to preside over an official reception ceremony for these artefacts.
Since the exhibit of 99 sculptures returned in previous years began on June 18, the museum has experienced a surge in visitor numbers, especially on weekends and holidays. The exhibit, featuring these sculptures alongside other permanent pieces, will be on display until December 18.
“The number of local visitors, especially young people, is increasing dramatically. On weekends, we see between 800 and 1,500 visitors, and on holidays, the number can exceed 2,000,” Visoth reported. He noted that many youths visit to take photos and videos, which is a positive trend.
However, Visoth acknowledged that visitors might not receive extensive information about Khmer cultural heritage due to limited details provided for each artefact and the absence of a guide service unless requested in advance. He explained that the museum only prepares for advance bookings, similar to practices at museums worldwide.
“We are gradually increasing the number of information boards to help visitors better understand the exhibits,” Visoth added, noting that while there are currently no plans for regular guided tours, efforts are being made to improve informational resources.
