Kim Beazley to Attend Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention in Siem Reap
Australian War Memorial Chairman highlights Australia’s continued support for Cambodia’s demining efforts.
Kim Beazley, Chairman of the Australian War Memorial and former Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence, will visit Siem Reap from November 23-26 to attend the Fifth Review Conference (5RC) of the States Parties to the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention, also known as the Ottawa Convention. The visit reinforces Australia’s long-standing partnership with Cambodia in the global fight against landmines.
The conference brings together global leaders and experts in demining, with Cambodia being recognized for its leadership in mine action. Once one of the most heavily mined countries in the world, Cambodia has made significant strides in clearing land contaminated by explosive remnants of war (ERW). Australia has been a steadfast supporter of Cambodia’s demining efforts for over 30 years, contributing around AUD 100 million (approximately 65 million US dollars) to mine action. This support has included providing advanced demining equipment, training for local deminers, and funding programs focused on the rehabilitation and reintegration of landmine survivors.
In a press release from the Australian embassy, the Australian delegation praised Cambodia’s progress, calling the country’s journey toward becoming a mine impact-free nation an inspiring example of what can be achieved through dedication and collaboration. As a result of these efforts, Cambodia has transformed former battlegrounds into productive farming land, boosting rural development and economic growth.
