Following backlash on social media, spokesperson Toch Sokhak emphasized that illegal loans violate the law, and knowingly borrowing with the intent of non-repayment is also unlawful. He urged victims to file complaints, reinforcing the need for legal action against illicit lending practices.

Human rights group LICADHO has welcomed the ministry’s stance, highlighting the serious risks of online loans, including coercion, intimidation, and even suicide linked to debt pressures. While the government has pledged to tackle the issue, civic groups are calling for stronger enforcement and public education to differentiate legal and illegal lending.
