Phat Sanday Ecotourism Community: A Rising Destination in Kampong Thom

Unique lake-based tourism offers visitors rich natural and cultural experiences
Kampong Thom province is shedding its image as a stopover point and emerging as a tourism destination in its own right. Located on the Tonle Sap Lake, the Phat Sanday Ecotourism Community spans approximately 23,000 hectares and offers visitors a blend of natural beauty and immersive local experiences.

Established in 2019, the community is located in Phat Sanday commune, Kampong Svay district, a short drive from Phnom Penh. It provides visitors with opportunities to explore the community and flooded forests, stay in local lodging, enjoy traditional cuisine, and embark on scenic boat tours.

Before its formal establishment, the area faced challenges from illegal fishing and resource depletion. With support from conservation initiatives, efforts were made to address these issues through community patrols, waste management, and ecotourism projects. These measures have led to a resurgence in fish and bird populations, drawing praise from national leaders.

Visitors can enjoy a variety of experiences, including climbing an observation tower to view the flooded forest, exploring stilt trees over 200 years old, and participating in local fishing activities. Tour packages cater to both domestic and international tourists, with one-day trips available from Phnom Penh and Kampong Chhnang, starting from $29.

The community also offers boat rides, accommodation, and camping options, with pricing designed to support local livelihoods. The initiative aims to balance tourism growth with environmental conservation while creating sustainable income for the community.
