Phnom Penh Port Sees Surge in Shipping Activity
Phnom Penh Autonomous Port saw a notable increase in shipping activity in 2024, with a twenty-five point four seven percent rise in cargo ships and a nineteen point nine eight percent increase in container volume. This growth is linked to Cambodia's economic improvements and infrastructure projects like the Funan Techo Canal, further boosting the country's trade, which reached forty point nine four billion dollars in the first nine months of the year.
Phnom Penh Autonomous Port (PPAP) experienced a significant rise in shipping activity during the first nine months of 2024, as over four thousand cargo ships docked at the port, marking a 25.47% year-on-year increase.
The volume of containers reached 365,987 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), a 19.98% rise, while passenger boats increased by 26.06% with 23,667 passengers passing through, a 65.71% increase.
In September alone, cargo vessel activity grew by 134.72% compared to the same month in 2023, and container handling rose by 45.11%.
This growth is attributed to improved national policies and economic conditions, with further expansion expected from infrastructure projects like the Funan Techo Canal, which will enhance Cambodia's shipping independence by connecting to its deep-sea port in Preah Sihanouk.
Notably, the country's total international trade also increased by 16.4%, with exports up 17% and imports expanding by 15.9%.
