Plans Underway to Transform Former Siem Reap Airport into Angkor Wat Museum

Talks with investors aim to develop a historical museum offering digital exhibitions of Angkor Wat’s construction and heritage.
When the Siem Reap Angkor International Airport opened in October 2023, the former Siem Reap airport ceased operations, raising questions about its future. Now, discussions are underway to convert the old airport into a museum focused on Angkor Wat’s history. Chea Oun, Secretary of State at the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation, revealed that foreign investors are interested in creating a modern museum featuring digital exhibitions of Angkor Wat's construction process.

The new museum aims to offer visitors deeper insights into Cambodia's rich cultural heritage before they visit the iconic temples. While the name of the investment company has yet to be disclosed, Oun assured that the firm has a solid reputation in European museum operations. The project, still in the agreement phase, aligns with government principles and UNESCO guidelines.

Local tour guides, such as Chan Monicharya, welcomed the initiative, believing it will enrich the tourist experience and contribute to the local economy by encouraging longer stays in Siem Reap.
