Cambodia has officially expanded Preah Sihanouk province with the establishment of a new town named "Kampong Som," aimed at enhancing local governance and services. The town, consisting of five communes previously part of Prey Nob district—Ream, Bit Traing, O’Oknha Heng, Boeung Ta Prohm, and O’Chrov—aims to bring administrative and development efforts closer to the residents and investors. This move, decreed by Prime Minister Hun Manet on August 28, is part of broader plans to transform the province into a multi-purpose special economic zone (SEZ).

Provincial deputy governor Long Dimanche explained that the decision to create Kampong Som reflects the area's growth and strategic importance, particularly the Ream area, expected to attract further investments and residents. The town’s establishment is seen as a step to ensure that services are efficiently available to all stakeholders in the rapidly developing region. Kampong Som will operate from an administrative office located in Ream commune, with the existing communes transitioning into urban sangkats as part of the new town structure.
