Preah Sihanouk Province Set to Approve $500 Million Special Economic Zone

New investment aims to attract international businesses and boost Cambodia’s export potential.
The East Sihanouk Special Economic Zone, with an investment of approximately $500 million, is nearing final approval from the Cambodian government. Developed by the East Group consortium, the project spans 340 hectares in Prey Nob district’s Bet Trang and Ou Oknha Heng communes, near Sihanoukville. The plans for the SEZ include residential zones, retail areas, and factories of various sizes, divided into three phases, with phase one covering 90 hectares.

Nang Sothy, technical advisor to East Group, stated that investment plans are progressing smoothly, with a 1.5-kilometre road already constructed to connect the site to National Road No. 4. The SEZ is expected to play a key role in attracting international investors, particularly companies from China, looking to establish manufacturing facilities in Cambodia due to global trade shifts. Special Economic Zones like this one are seen as crucial for meeting domestic demand and boosting export potential.

The development of SEZs is a vital part of Cambodia’s strategy to attract foreign investment and foster industrial growth. The Kingdom has opened four new zones in 2024, bringing the total to 30 across the country. The Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation’s annual report highlights the role of SEZs in enhancing Cambodia’s competitiveness, increasing productivity, and expanding export markets. The government remains committed to further promoting the growth of SEZs, creating more jobs, and strengthening the economy.
