The Apsara National Authority (ANA) has completed the restoration of the head of a Makara sculpture in Siem Reap's Teuk Likh village, Svay Leu district. The sculpture, part of an ancient drainage system, had suffered significant damage due to erosion and lack of maintenance over the centuries. The restoration project, which began in mid-May, is part of ongoing efforts to preserve Cambodia’s rich cultural heritage. The Makara, a mythical Hindu water creature, is integral to the country’s ancient water management system.

ANA engineer Boeuth Sopak, who led the restoration team, explained the meticulous process of reassembling the sculpture, which included mapping out scattered rocks, excavating, and strengthening the damaged parts. The 18-meter stretch of the drainage system was restored using a combination of modern techniques and traditional craftsmanship to ensure its long-term stability. The project has also made the site more accessible to tourists by improving nearby roadways. The restored Makara sculpture, located near the Boeng Mealea temple, is expected to become a key attraction for cultural tourism.
