Siem Reap Soars as Australia’s Top Travel Destination for 2025

Skyscanner Report Reveals a 529% Surge in Australian Interest
Siem Reap has skyrocketed to the top of Australian travelers’ wish lists for 2025, experiencing an unprecedented 529 percent increase in interest, according to Skyscanner's Travel Trends 2025 report. This shift marks a significant change for Australians who have traditionally favored destinations like Tokyo and Kyoto for their cultural experiences and culinary delights. Instead, Siem Reap’s rich heritage, including the iconic Angkor Wat, vibrant local culture, and emerging tourism infrastructure, has captured the attention of adventurers seeking new horizons.

Tob Sopheak, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Tourism, emphasized the importance of Australian visitors to Cambodia’s tourism sector. In 2023, Cambodian tourism saw a remarkable 131 percent increase in Australian arrivals, totaling 87,207 visitors. By September 2024, over 70,000 Australians had already visited, predominantly exploring Siem Reap. “We are committed to welcoming them with enhanced hospitality and services to ensure a memorable experience,” Sopheak stated. Ly Vannak, Director of Administration for Siem Reap province, highlighted the positive impact on local tourism and Cambodia’s international image, promising improved facilities and safety measures to meet and exceed tourist expectations.

The Skyscanner report also identified key factors influencing Australians’ travel choices, with weather, attractions, food, and culture leading the decision-making process. Additionally, the rise of the 'cowboy core' trend, focusing on country music and outdoor activities, complements Siem Reap’s diverse offerings. As Cambodia continues to develop its tourism infrastructure, including upgrades at Siem Reap International Airport and Techo International Airport, the country is well-positioned to sustain and grow its appeal to Australian travelers. With strategic promotions and infrastructure enhancements, Siem Reap is set to welcome a new wave of tourists, fostering economic growth and cultural exchange.
