Transforming Vision Care in Cambodia: Khmer Sight Foundation's Pioneering Efforts

Comprehensive initiatives by KSF target preventable blindness and enhance eye health services across Cambodia.
The Khmer Sight Foundation (KSF), co-founded by Professor Sunil Shah and Sean Ngu, has been instrumental in reshaping eye care in Cambodia, a nation where eye health services are often inaccessible and unaffordable for many. Since its inception, KSF has embarked on a mission to deliver sustainable eye care across the country, particularly focusing on areas heavily impacted by historical adversities and current shortages in medical professionals.

KSF's three-pronged approach includes developing local eye care infrastructure, addressing the extensive backlog of cataract surgeries, and cultivating future generations of eye care professionals. Over 180,000 Cambodians suffer from blindness, with 90% of these cases being preventable or treatable, primarily caused by cataracts. KSF aims to drastically reduce these numbers by enhancing local capabilities and providing direct intervention through surgery.

The foundation not only builds physical facilities but also offers comprehensive training for local health workers, creating a sustainable model for ongoing care. Their efforts are bolstered by international support, with over 100 UK ophthalmologists and numerous global eye care companies contributing expertise and resources.

Furthermore, KSF's educational initiatives include launching Cambodia's first optometry training program, addressing the severe lack of trained eye care specialists in the country. This program is designed to be accessible and practical, allowing students to progress through various levels of certification, potentially transforming eye health management in Cambodia.

KSF’s efforts have garnered support from the highest levels, including the King of Cambodia, ensuring its protection and continuity regardless of political changes. This support underscores the foundation's crucial role in the nation's health infrastructure and its potential to significantly improve the lives of countless Cambodians.
