USAID Administrator Samantha Power, during her landmark visit to Cambodia, announced an additional $5 million in support for civil society, workers, and independent media. Power, the first USAID administrator to visit the country, highlighted the importance of upholding democratic values and press freedom in a series of meetings with Cambodian officials, including Prime Minister Hun Manet.

In her remarks on October 23, Power acknowledged the case of journalist Mech Dara, who was recently released on bail after being arrested on charges of inciting serious social unrest. She met with Dara's family and discussed his case with the prime minister, emphasizing the need for positive resolutions and the protection of press freedom. Dara was released after apologizing for posting inaccurate information on social media.

Power stressed that the United States seeks to be a strong partner in Cambodia's economic growth but underscored that this can only be realized if human rights, transparency, and anti-corruption measures are prioritized. She noted that American companies are interested in investing in Cambodia but are concerned about issues such as corruption, labor rights, and cybercrime. "It's really important for investors to have confidence in the rule of law and to know that they can invest here without paying bribes or engaging in illegal kickbacks," she stated.
