Women Boat Skippers on Tonle Sap Lake Draw Tourists with Unique Experiences

Empowering Women and Showcasing Local Traditions in Cambodia’s Largest Lake
More than a thousand women are making waves on Cambodia’s Tonle Sap Lake, drawing tourists with their skills as boat skippers and tour guides. Hailing from Kampong Phluk commune, these women paddle small wooden boats, offering visitors a glimpse into the local way of life, including stilt houses and fish production.

Established in 2013, the Kampong Phluk Natural Tourism Community now has over 1,000 boats, creating seasonal jobs for women from August to December. This occupation has not only provided income but has also elevated their status, showing that women can take on roles traditionally held by men.

With tourists paying $6 for a 30-minute boat ride, the women are enjoying attention both locally and internationally. Their friendly and knowledgeable service has helped attract over 220,000 visitors to Kampong Phluk in the first seven months of 2024.
