“Smile of Cambodia” Festival Celebrates King’s 20th Anniversary and Revitalizes Tourism

Second edition of the festival attracts record numbers of local and international guests, showcasing Khmer culture and arts
The “Smile of Cambodia” festival, now in its second edition, is taking place at the Angkor resort in Siem Reap province from October 29 to 30, 2024. Celebrating the 20th anniversary of King Norodom Sihamoni’s reign, the event has drawn both local and international guests eager to experience a grand display of Khmer culture and arts. Organized by the Khmer Artists Association and supported by prominent officials, the festival features traditional Khmer dance, a multicultural art exhibition, and the vibrant afternoon parade of Angkorian kings, highlighting Cambodia’s rich cultural heritage and artistic diversity.

This year’s festival marks a significant milestone in Cambodia’s efforts to rejuvenate its tourism sector following a downturn caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. With an estimated 750 to 800 artists participating—500 more than initially projected—the event has seen remarkable growth in attendance and engagement. National Bank of Cambodia reports that 3.1 million foreign tourists visited the country in the first half of 2024, generating $1.7 billion in revenue, a 7 percent increase from the previous year. The festival aligns with Cambodia’s vision to achieve upper-middle-income status by 2030 and high-income status by 2050, playing a crucial role in promoting the nation as a vibrant and culturally rich destination.

In addition to cultural performances, the festival includes a tasting fair with authentic Khmer cuisine, live performances, and a mini-concert, providing visitors with an immersive experience of Cambodian traditions. Khmer Artists Association President Mao Chamnan emphasized the festival’s role in uniting artisans and boosting tourism, while advisor Seth Kimsoeun highlighted the enthusiastic participation of the crowd. As Cambodia continues to enhance its tourism offerings and embrace digital promotion, events like the “Smile of Cambodia” festival are pivotal in showcasing the country’s resilience, cultural legacy, and commitment to becoming a premier global cultural destination.
