Battambang Joins UNESCO Creative Cities Network, Champions Sustainable Gastronomy

Cambodian city recognized for its commitment to preserving culinary heritage and fostering sustainable development
On Sustainable Gastronomy Day, UNESCO highlighted the significant role of gastronomy as a cultural expression that harmonizes environmental protection with cultural diversity preservation. This year, the spotlight shines on Battambang, Cambodia, which has been designated as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy for its efforts in promoting sustainable culinary practices and economic growth through its rich culinary traditions.

Battambang has become a model city in integrating sustainable gastronomy into its development, with initiatives like food fairs, a new night market, and innovative recycling systems. These endeavors not only preserve traditional Khmer recipes and techniques but also promote local products like the region’s award-winning jasmine rice, traditional fish-based products, and fresh produce.

This recognition places Battambang within the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN), which supports cities in leveraging creativity for sustainable urban development. The network, encompassing over 350 cities globally, aims to foster economic growth, social cohesion, and inter-cultural dialogue through creativity in various fields.

For Battambang, this designation is an opportunity to highlight its culinary heritage on an international stage, advocate for sustainable practices, and foster cultural exchange, aligning with UNESCO’s mission to drive sustainable development and cultural preservation.
