Cambodia Celebrates World Teachers’ Day with Focus on Enhancing Teacher Development
Ministry of Education and UNESCO commit to advancing teacher training to support Cambodia's Vision 2050.
The Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport (MoEYS) and UNESCO marked World Teachers’ Day on September 26, highlighting the crucial role of teachers in shaping Cambodia's future. Held at the Institute of Technology of Cambodia, the event centered around the theme, "Teacher development to enhance human capital towards Cambodia’s Vision 2050." Minister Hang Chuon Naron emphasized the government's ongoing commitment to strengthening teacher education institutions and supporting educators to improve student outcomes.
The global teacher shortage is a pressing issue, with estimates suggesting a deficit of 44 million teachers by 2030. In Cambodia, MoEYS has prioritized teacher development over the past decade, with initiatives aimed at improving pre-service and in-service training, attracting qualified individuals to the profession, and promoting a sustainable, knowledge-based education system.
UNESCO and MoEYS have jointly implemented the Strengthening Teacher Education Programmes (STEPCam) since 2018, benefiting over 230,000 students and 130,000 education staff. Phase II of STEPCam, set to run from 2024, will focus on digital transformation in education, continuing efforts to build a high-quality teaching workforce essential to Cambodia's goal of achieving upper-middle-income status by 2030.
