In the first nine months of 2024, bilateral trade between Cambodia and Japan reached nearly one point six billion dollars, marking an increase of almost twenty percent compared to the same period in 2023.

Cambodia's exports to Japan amounted to over one billion dollars, while imports from Japan totaled five hundred thirty-seven point nine four million dollars.

This resulted in Cambodia enjoying a trade surplus of five hundred nineteen point one three million dollars.

Japan emerged as Cambodia's fifth-largest trading partner, following China, the United States, Vietnam, and Thailand.

Lim Heng, vice-president of the Cambodia Chamber of Commerce, highlighted the strong government and private sector relations between the two countries as key drivers of the trade growth.

The Chamber of Commerce recently established a representative office in Japan to further promote Cambodian exports and attract Japanese investment.

Key exports to Japan include garments, footwear, electronic components, and agricultural products, whereas main imports from Japan are machinery, automobiles, electronics, and food products.

Besides trade, Japanese investments in Cambodia cover sectors such as agriculture, industry, real estate, and banking.

During Prime Minister Hun Manet's visit to Japan for the ASEAN-Japan Commemorative Summit in December 2023, he encouraged increased Japanese investments in Cambodia, including exploring a special economic zone between the two countries.

Economist Hong Vanak emphasized Japan’s role in Cambodia's development and the potential for continued export growth as Cambodia supplies components to Japanese factories.
