Thousands of Counterfeit Reviews and Phony Businesses: The Extensive Fraud Exposed on Google Search and Maps

An inquiry has uncovered a global fraud syndicate peddling counterfeit business listings and fraudulent reviews on Google Maps. This revelation of an extensive scam operation offers a sobering reminder that ratings, reviews, views, likes, and followers are purchasable for millions across the internet, and should be approached with skepticism rather than blind trust. Although companies such as Google are attempting to combat fake accounts that pay for significant profits, consumers should also remain vigilant when seeking services online.
An inquiry triggered by a complaint from a Texas locksmith revealed an international scam operation that marketed tens of thousands of counterfeit business listings via Google Maps. The perpetrators seized existing business profiles and created fake positive reviews to lure unsuspecting clients. Here’s how to recognize such scams and safeguard yourself.

Google has identified more than 10,000 fraudulent business listings on its widely-used Google Maps application, which is found on nearly every smartphone, and has started legal proceedings against those involved in the fraudulent activities. This information was reported by CBS Network yesterday (Wednesday). The results of a thorough investigation conducted by the company showed that this fraud network was responsible for creating and selling phony business profiles on the platform.

The Fraud Network and Its Methods
The scam was first uncovered when a licensed locksmith in Texas found that an unlicensed locksmith was misusing his name on Google Maps. A local investigation unfolded into a larger scheme, prompting a comprehensive inquiry. Ultimately, Google opted to eliminate over 10,000 of these illegitimate listings from its maps.

These fraudulent listings included entirely fictitious businesses and hijacked profiles of legitimate companies, which were duplicated and modified to promote unauthorized entities. According to Google’s legal advisor, Halima Dlayne Prado, when the company receives a tip about such fraud, it takes swift action to pinpoint similar fraudulent listings.

This is not a new issue. Google has been combatting fake businesses offering services via Google Maps for several years. The scammers would create profiles for existing companies that lacked official listings or management, attaching a genuine address, a legitimate website, or photos, but replacing the authentic phone number with their own.

How the Scammers Operate
Once the fraudsters established these fake profiles, Google Maps would often recommend the sham company based on user searches. As a result, users would unknowingly reach out to a scammer posing as a licensed business. There were instances where it was even suggested that Google benefited from this, as the counterfeit companies would pay for promotions to enhance their visibility in relevant search results.

Google noted that the majority of these bogus businesses were locksmiths, towing services, and other types of assistance people seek in emergencies. In such high-pressure circumstances, individuals tend to look for nearby professionals on Google Maps, even if they have never utilized their services previously. Regrettably, instead of contacting a legitimate expert, they might unknowingly engage with an impostor.

The Increasing Sophistication of Scammers
Halima Dlayne Prado stated that the fraudsters were becoming more sophisticated in their methods. They collaborated with agents worldwide and even leveraged social media to expand their deceitful networks. According to Google, the con artists also sold fabricated positive reviews for businesses, further masking negative feedback on social media platforms. In one legal case, Google presented an example of a Facebook post containing "5-star reviews" for entirely fictitious businesses.

Common Schemes Employed by Scammers
The investigation by Google uncovered several strategies employed by these fraudsters. In certain cases, customers would call a legitimate company, but their calls would be intercepted and redirected through a lead generation service that connected them to the scammers. More often than not, the fraudster would arrive to provide the service at inflated prices, exploiting the customer's urgency. Individuals pressed for swift service often felt compelled to pay these inflated fees.

How to Avoid Being a Victim of These Scams
Google advises caution, even in pressing situations. Consumers should diligently verify the website address and phone number of the company they are contacting, ensuring they conform to the Google Maps listing. A warning sign should arise if the company requests excessive information, like an ID number, or demands payment through unconventional methods such as gift cards or wire transfers.

To tackle such fraud, Google has established various tools, both automated and human-supported by analysts. The company claims to have removed or blocked around 12 million fake business profiles annually over the past two years. Moreover, Google announced plans to donate any compensation it garners from legal actions regarding this matter to organizations combating fraud.

Google’s Dedication to Fighting Fraud
Google is dedicated to making Google Maps a safer platform for both businesses and consumers. The company has been proactively investigating fraudulent activities and implementing strategies to reduce the incidence of fake business listings and reviews. The recent legal measures underscore its ongoing commitment to preserving the integrity of its services and shielding users from deceptive practices.

Further Insights on Fraudulent Business Listings
Fake business listings on platforms like Google Maps not only mislead consumers into scams but also damage the reputation of legitimate businesses. Fraudsters can manipulate the competitive landscape by tampering with search results, unfairly benefitting fake companies that mislead customers. Google’s efforts to eliminate counterfeit listings represent a crucial step toward safeguarding both consumers and businesses from these harmful activities.

As the popularity of online platforms and mapping services continues to rise, so does the potential for fraud in these areas. Both businesses and consumers must remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to platforms like Google to inhibit the spread of fake listings.
