Vietnam has expressed a desire to collaborate with Cambodia on a comprehensive evaluation of the Funan Techo Canal project’s potential effects on the region, according to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Mekong River, a crucial resource and symbol of solidarity between Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia, is at the center of these concerns.

At a press briefing, Deputy Spokesperson Doan Khac Viet emphasized Vietnam's support for Cambodia's development while highlighting the importance of cooperation in managing the Mekong’s resources sustainably. Vietnam is eager to work with Cambodia to identify and implement measures that mitigate any negative impacts of the project.

Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Manet recently initiated the construction of the canal, which is expected to connect the Mekong River to the Gulf of Thailand. The project, estimated at $1.7 billion, aims to reduce Cambodia’s reliance on Vietnamese ports and boost economic activity significantly.
