Cambodian prosecutors have upgraded charges against Si Loeuy, a 40-year-old man, from attempted murder to murder following the death of veteran journalist Chhoeung Chheng. The 63-year-old reporter, who was covering illegal logging, succumbed to a gunshot wound on December 7, two days after being shot in Siem Reap province’s Chik Reang district.

The incident occurred near the Boeung Per Wildlife Sanctuary, where Chheng was riding his motorbike and was struck in the abdomen by a bullet fired from a home-made gun. Siem Reap Provincial Court Prosecutor Meas Chanpiseth announced on December 13 that the charge would be amended, as the original attempted murder charge was filed while Chheng was still undergoing surgery.

Chhoeung Chheng, a respected journalist, was known for his reporting on environmental issues. The case highlights ongoing concerns over violence against journalists covering illegal activities in Cambodia’s protected areas.
