Cambodia Accelerates Water Reservoir Registration to Prevent Land Grabs and Ensure Water Security

Authorities Urge Farmers to Follow Water Use Plans Amid Growing Shortage Concerns
Cambodia’s Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology is accelerating efforts to register over 1,500 water reservoirs and earth water tanks with land titles to prevent land encroachment and safeguard water resources, especially during the dry season.

So far, 197 reservoirs have been registered, with another 273 in progress. The remaining 1,092 are awaiting the start of the process. Officials stress that land titles will prevent illegal encroachment and ensure long-term access to water sources.

Provincial authorities are also urging farmers to adhere to recommended water use plans, limiting dry-season rice cultivation to prevent shortages. However, many farmers have exceeded irrigation limits, raising concerns over water scarcity in the coming months.

Authorities continue to emphasize the importance of sustainable water management to mitigate the impact of climate change and ensure water availability for both agriculture and daily use.
