Cambodia celebrated the UNESCO inscription of the iconic woven krama on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity on December 2, 2024. Among the many voices celebrating this milestone was Mean Sonyta, affectionately known as the "Queen of Krama," who has spent over seven years promoting the craft through her design boutique, Slanh House. Sonyta’s journey began after seeing the rise of imported goods masquerading as local products during her visits to Cambodia’s tourist destinations. Determined to revive the fading tradition of krama weaving, she founded the Slanh Community—a group of 20 women who now produce high-quality, authentic krama products. Through her online store and physical boutique in Phnom Penh, Sonyta has ensured that the krama, a fabric with deep roots in Cambodian culture, is reimagined in fashion, from casual wear to high-fashion evening gowns. Her creations incorporate modern influences while celebrating the cultural significance of the krama, creating a unique fusion of heritage and innovation.

Sonyta’s efforts have been crucial not only in preserving the craft but also in empowering local artisans and supporting their livelihoods. By prioritizing the handmade quality of each krama, she has raised awareness of the value of traditional craftsmanship, even in the face of mass-produced alternatives.
