Cambodia Celebrates UNESCO Recognition of the Krama: The Role of the “Krama Queen” in Preserving Culture

Mean Sonyta’s Dedication to the Krama: Elevating Cambodia’s Cultural Heritage
Cambodia celebrated the UNESCO inscription of the iconic woven krama on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity on December 2, 2024. Among the many voices celebrating this milestone was Mean Sonyta, affectionately known as the "Queen of Krama," who has spent over seven years promoting the craft through her design boutique, Slanh House. Her dedication to preserving this traditional fabric, woven with cultural significance, has allowed her to play a pivotal role in bringing the krama back into the spotlight, both in Cambodia and internationally.

Sonyta’s journey began after seeing the rise of imported goods masquerading as local products during her visits to Cambodia’s tourist destinations. Determined to revive the fading tradition of krama weaving, she founded the Slanh Community—a group of 20 women who now produce high-quality, authentic krama products. Through her online store and physical boutique in Phnom Penh, Sonyta has ensured that the krama, a fabric with deep roots in Cambodian culture, is reimagined in fashion, from casual wear to high-fashion evening gowns. Her creations incorporate modern influences while celebrating the cultural significance of the krama, creating a unique fusion of heritage and innovation.

Sonyta’s efforts have been crucial not only in preserving the craft but also in empowering local artisans and supporting their livelihoods. By prioritizing the handmade quality of each krama, she has raised awareness of the value of traditional craftsmanship, even in the face of mass-produced alternatives. With the recent UNESCO recognition, Sonyta’s work is more important than ever, as it helps ensure the krama’s place in Cambodia’s cultural identity while fostering sustainable economic development in rural communities. Her work with Slanh House continues to keep the krama alive for future generations of Cambodians, showcasing its versatility and cultural pride.
